EMDR and Ego State Therapy:
Healing Complex Trauma and Dissociation |
 |
Presented by
Dr Michael C. Paterson OBE
PhD, DClinPsych, CPsychol, CSci, AFBPsS
EMDR Institute Trainer
|
Next
Workshop:
Manchester
on 31 May 2011 |
This workshop initially provides an overview of dissociation and how
it impacts on EMDR processing. There will be an explanation of Ego
State Therapy (EST) and how it fits with EMDR to provide the
stabilization clients need, as well as dealing with blocked
processing. Clinical case material is used throughout to
illustrate learning points. Through demonstration and practice
participants will learn how to build resources for clients, access
ego states in a controlled way and effect therapeutic change. In the
latter part of the day, participants will see videos of live cases
where EST is used effectively in the Preparation Phase of EMDR to:
1) identify the part-selves and 2) moderate the malevolence
displayed by two difficult ego states.
Learning objectives
-
Understand how complex trauma and dissociative disorders impact
EMDR processing
-
Understand the concept of working with part-selves as a way of
preparing clients for the standard EMDR protocol.
-
Learn how to access ego states in a controlled way and effect
therapeutic change and stability.
-
Learn techniques to deal with difficult ego states.
Rationale
We all display particular patterns of thinking, feeling and acting,
depending on the situation. The transition is usually seamless in
well-adjusted people, but where there has been disrupted attachment
or sustained early life trauma the result is often the formation of
particular ego states, also known as alters, parts, or schema
modes. These states perform roles usually geared towards survival,
but in adulthood they can be dysfunctional. Depending upon a
client’s early life experiences some ego states can be malevolent,
wanting bad things for the client such as willing them to suffer in
some way. These clients present us with the greatest challenges
through what we know as complex trauma and dissociative disorders.
It is necessary for clients to remain stable during EMDR sessions
and contained between sessions, particularly with complex trauma and
dissociative disorders. There is a need, therefore, to learn
techniques to work in the Preparation Phase with more difficult
clients so they too can benefit from the full EMDR protocol. It is
also helpful to know how to deal with blocked processing in the
Desensitization Phase due to the interference of an ego-state.
The Presenter
Dr Michael Paterson is a Clinical Psychologist based in Belfast
specialising in the treatment of multiply traumatised people. It was
largely based on his clinical work with EMDR that he was awarded the
OBE in 2008 for Services to Healthcare in Northern Ireland.
Always an advocate for EMDR, Michael sat on CREST in 2003 (Northern
Ireland) and played a key role in ensuring the recommendation of
EMDR as an effective treatment for PTSD in adults; the guidance from
CREST subsequently fed into the NICE deliberations and their
recommendation in 2005.
He was invited by Dr Shapiro to train with her as an EMDR Institute
Trainer, joining the Institute’s Faculty in 2006. Michael is the
current President of the EMDR Association of UK & Ireland.
Michael has authored a chapter in the landmark book, Healing the
Heart of Trauma and Dissociation with EMDR and Ego State Therapy.
He has also published articles on stress, and on trauma in the
emergency services. He has presented at conferences on treating
complex PTSD, and also conferences specialising in dissociation.

and work with client ambivalence about change
- Assist
clients to assess their own readiness to change and make
appropriate decisions about their behaviour
- Learn
reflective listening skills to elicit change-talk
- Recognise
and roll with client resistance
- Gain
experience, through demonstration and practice, in this
evocative counselling style, and how it contrasts with methods
of overt persuasion
- Understand
the process and psychology of change
The Trainer
Paul McKenna has
trained extensively in the use of motivational interviewing, and has
become expert in initiating and maintaining behaviour change. He is
a member of the International Network of Motivational Interviewing

Effective Negotiating
In
the current economic climate there are tremendous pressures on
managers to control costs and maximise benefits. This workshop will

situations, be they buying, selling or labour relations. This will
be achieved by:

Identifying effective and ineffective negotiating behaviour.
-
Identifying the theory and structure behind negotiations
-
Identifying the skills used in negotiation
-
Practising and improving on existing negotiation skills in a

There will be inputs on
negotiating theory, behaviour and best practice but a large
proportion of the time will be spent on negotiating exercises. These
will be video recorded, analyzed and fed back to the participants.
To
facilitate effective feedback, a maximum of 6 participants only
can be accommodated.
Venue
Our training
suite in Belfast.
The Trainer
– We have an experienced trainer and negotiator who has trained managers from leading organisations

Testimonials
“Having attended the course I can honestly
say that I now have more confidence when it comes to making
a business deal (negotiation). The techniques and tips
revealed through the negotiation course mean that I am now
on the same, if not a higher level, as those I am competing
with. While I haven’t made my first million – yet, I firmly
believe that the skills revealed through the course have
certainly put me on that path. It’s money well spent.”
Phil Duggan, Computer Solutions
“The
training was delivered in a practical, down to earth way. I
was able to put it into practice immediately”. - David
McNellis, Agency Director, Lisney Property Consultants
“It
enabled me to achieve measurable improvements in my next
major negotiation”. – Alan Boyce,
Managing Director, Toni & Guy (Ireland)
“My
colleagues and I are now much better prepared for
negotiations. As a result we are a lot more confident of our
own position and therefore willing to listen and fully
explore the other side’s position before making our pitch”.
– Bill Duff, Criminal Justice
Solutions.
“The
skills I developed on the negotiation course have already
stood me in good stead. I was able to handle a challenging
negotiation situation with confidence and reached a result
that all were happy with” – Dr
Paul W Miller, Consultant Psychiatrist

Learning Skills - Learning to Learn from
Experience
Managers are not
necessarily more effective because they have had more experience. They are more
effective because they have learned more from their experience. In a rapidly
changing environment the ability to learn quickly from experience is an
essential life skill.
The workshop will
help the managers understand the learning process and their own learning style.
It will enable them to become more efficient learners and be more proactive in
making the most of learning opportunities in business and private life.
Methodology
There will be
inputs from the tutor on adult learning theory. A questionnaire will be used to
help the participants understand their personal learning styles, how to play to
their strengths and develop areas of weakness. They will produce an action plan
for ongoing learning.
